Meet Volunteer Job Descriptions
Chief Timer
Needs previous experience
Convenes the Timer meeting at the start of the meet
Verifies that all lanes have 3 timers present
Briefs the timers on their jobs
Passes out timer clipboards
Verifies “Timers Ready” at the start of every heat
Times each race in case another timer needs back-up
Timers
Times the race, starting as instructed by the starter and stopping the watch
when any part of the swimmer touches the wall.
Records times on timer sheets.
Computers – Scoring Lead
Needs previous experience
Type the times into the computer as they are read to them
Makes the changes from the scratch meeting
Prints copies of the meets results
Produces disks for both teams and the League
Prior to the meet works with coaches to prepare the roster and heats.
Computers – Scoring Support
Reads the times from the timer sheets to the computer operator
Receives the timer sheets and puts them in lane order
Staples any DQ cards to time sheets
Notifies the Referee if there is not an official time recorded
Hands the timer sheets to computer operator
Head Clerk of Course
Conducts pre-meet
scratch meeting for adjustments and changes
Assigns other clerks to deck locations and responsibilitiesChecks in the swimmers and tells them their lanes
Tells the swimmers where to wait for their events
Clerk of Course
Checks
in the swimmers and tells them their lanes
Tells the swimmers where to wait for their events
Participates in the “scratch meeting” to make substitutions
Runner
Picks
up the timer sheets from the timers and any DQ cards from the four (4) Stroke
& Turn judges and takes them to the scoring table.
Announcer
Needs previous experience
Announces the events and heats
Makes any other general announcements
Referee
Needs previous experience.
The referee runs the meet and has overall authority and control of the competition, ensuring that all the rules are followed.
Must be thoroughly familiar with all rules.
Conducts meeting with officials prior to meet and is the final arbiter of all
decisions.
Stroke and Turn Judge
Needs previous experience
Determine whether swimmers perform their strokes, turns, and finishes in accordance with the rules.
Team Marshall
Monitors
the behavior of the swimmers in the team area
Limits
traffic in and out of the team are
Assist
the clerks of course in locating swimmers for races
Keeps
the team area as calm and quiet as possible
